Did Arjuna and Karna really fight in Draupadi Swayamvara or is it an interpolated episode?

Why did Karna spare Arjuna (Bramhin) in Draupadi Swayamvar Battle? - Quora

In view of the following narrations available in Mahabharata (both Gita Press and BORI versions), I got this doubt.

A) Arjuna’s winning the Swayamvara, by hitting the target with 5 arrows, was followed by Draupadi’s garlanding him in token of her accepting him as husband. Thereafter, the following shloka is available.

स तामुपादाय विजित्य रङ्गे; द्विजातिभिस्तैरभिपूज्यमानः ।

रङ्गान्निरक्रामदचिन्त्यकर्मा; पत्न्या तया चाप्यनुगम्यमानः ॥

Then, shortly after amidst the blessings of the Brahmanas, Arjuna left the area, followed closely by Krishna (Draupadi).

Hence, it is clear that after winning the Swayamvara, and Draupadi accepting him as husband, Arjuna did not stay back to fight, but left the area.

Thus, the fight between Arjuna and Karna did not take place.

B) Even if we think that the above shloka is an interpolated one, the fight between Arjuna and Karna in the Draupadi Swayamvara, should have cross references in the subsequent chapters.

Interestingly, when the truth of Pandavas escaping from the Fire accident in Varanavata and the remarkable hero, who had strung the bow and hit the target was none other than Arjuna, reaches other kings, who came for Swayamvara, they expressed their resentment.

Word spread that the great warrior who had thrown down Salya, the king of Madra, and had instilled fear in the gathered kings with the uprooted tree, standing fearless before all enemies, was none other than Bhima, the destroyer of opposing forces, whose mere touch could claim the lives of any foe.

It was mentioned only about Bhima’s prowess and his victory over Shalya, but no where the fight between Karna and Arjuna was mentioned. The inference is Bhima might have stayed back and fought with the kings.

In view of the above, the fight between Arjuna and Karna might be an interpolated version
