How was Vibhishana still the king of Lanka during Mahabharata?

The original version of Mahabharata - Jaya samhita - contains 8,800 slokas only. In the expanded version of Mahabharata many interpolated stories were added like this story of Sahadeva sending message to Vibhishana.

The distance between Main land of India and Ravana’s Lanka was 100 Yojanas, ie., a minimum of 1000 km distance. And, present day Sri Lanka is not Ravana’s Lanka, as Sri Lanka is at the most at a distance of 50 Km from Rameswaram of Tamil Nadu.
If a messenger can be sent to Lanka as Sahadeva did, then Sri Rama might have easily reached Ravana’s Lanka without constructing a big and lengthy bridge.
Be assured that this story is an interpolated story.
