Is it true that, when the great war was over, the Pandavas left Draupadi behind, dying?
This episode, along with the deaths of Pandavas, except Yudhisthira was described in Mahaprasthanika Parva of Mahabharata.
The causes of falling down of all others , except Yudhisthira and the Dharma in the form of a dog were as follows:
- Draupadi : suffered from the vice of partiality, in her affections for Arjuna
- Sahadeva : suffered from the vice of pride and vanity, thought none was equal to him in wisdom
- Nakula : suffered from the vice of pride and vanity, thinking he was the most handsome person in the world
- Arjuna : suffered from the vice of pride and vanity, thinking he was the most skilled, most powerful warrior in the world
- Bhima : suffered from vice of gluttony, who used to eat too much without thinking about the hunger of others
We have to remember that
- Yudhisthira, adherent to Dharma and the Dharma in the form of a dog were able to complete the journey.
- Sage Vyasa hinted at the obstacles of Vanity, pride out of partiality/beauty/intelligence/skill and desire for delicious foods in the path of spirituality.
- Only the one, who overcomes all types of desires and vices - Arishadvargas - can achieve the final stage of spirituality.
- This name Mahaprasthanika Parva itself indicates it is a spiritual journey, where there is no place for partiality or desires or ego.
